Fix CentOS VM clipboard problem on VMware

I had an issue in which I couldn’t copy/paste from the host to my Centos VM but the other way around worked. To fix this issue you can try one of the following methods:

  • Reinstall VMtools:

Mount the cd drom

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom/
cd /mnt/cdrom/

Copy the installation archive to a location you desire

cp VMwareTools-9.6.0-1294478.tar.gz /home/dpopescu/

Extract the archieve content

gunzip VMwareTools-9.6.0-1294478.tar.gz

tar xvf VMwareTools-9.6.0-1294478.tar

Execute the script:

cd vmware-tools-distrib/

  • Disable/Enable clipboard from VMware Workstation menu

First disable the host clipboard by navigating to VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation

Uncheck the two options available: Enable drag and drop, Enable copy and paste and click OK

Power off the virtual machine

Now enable the clipboard by checking the Enable drag and drop and Enable copy and paste options from VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation menu

Power on the virtual machine

By applying these methods the clipboard should start working again.
