How to install VMware tools on CentOS

To install VMware tools on a CentOS machine you will need to perform several actions in the following order:

Create a new directory in which we’ll need to mount the virtual cdrom and then run the mount command
mkdir /mnt/cdrom
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

VMware tools
Now create a directory in another location (I’ve created it in /tmp) and copy VMwareTools-9.6.0-1294478.tar.gz file to that location
cp /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-*.tar.gz /tmp

Perl is needed for the installation so run the following command:
yum -y install perl

Extract the files from the .tar.gz file and execute vmware install script:
tar -zxf /tmp/VMwareTools-*.tar.gz -C /tmp/vmware –default
Wait for the installation to finish its operation then remote the newly created folders and unmount the cdrom.
